Trainer Application (Digital)

Who

Only certified instructors can teach the 8-hour Mental Health First Aid course to the public. Instructors may organize courses in their communities and may charge a fee. They must provide Mental Health First Aid USA participant manuals to all those who attend the course.

The primary role of instructors is to teach the Mental Health First Aid course. When they offer the course, instructors must teach the full 8-hour course with fidelity to the core program model and key messages. Each instructor has a set of materials to help guide them through course facilitation.

To teach a course, certified instructors must order manuals for all their participants, prepare course materials (available on the instructor website), compile local resources, and provide participant evaluations to Mental Health First Aid USA after the course. Instructors typically team up with another certified instructor to teach the course, but may also teach on their own.

Criteria

If you are interested in attending an instructor training, you must apply. Selection criteria, course tuition, and instructor expectations are outlined within the application.

No specific academic or professional credentials are required for instructor applicants. However, candidates should have knowledge of or experience with mental health problems (either personally, professionally, or both), prior experience in training adult learners, and commitment and capability to roll out Mental Health First Aid in the community.

Mental Health First Aid USA has trained and certified instructors from community mental health and addictions treatment organizations, state departments of health, universities, hospitals, federally qualified health centers, faith-based organizations, police and criminal justice, developmental disability centers, mental health authorities, other mental health advocacy organizations including Mental Health America and NAMI affiliates, and independent trainers. Qualified instructors may come from all levels of an organization – including CEOs and front-line staff – but should be whoever will be the best advocate for the program in your area.

training Cost

$1,500.

Typically training costs $2,000 plus travel and lodging in a large city.
This fee includes training, materials, an instructor kit, breakfast and lunch Monday - Thursday and breakfast on Friday.

Expedited training

If you are currently certified in Adult MHFA, we are accepting a total of 4 expedited YMHFA trainers at the cost of $850. (Payment via credit card can be made to include processing fees at $918 HERE.)

ARE YOU ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY, A MEMBER OF A MILITARY FAMILY, OR A VETERAN?

We are recruiting trainers from the Military/Veteran community in Idaho to take the lead in sharing this curriculum in their community. If you have Military background and are interested in helping with this initiative in Idaho please let us know. It might be possible to help with reimbursement for this training. Scholarship Application

This application is for those interested in obtaining scholarship funding to cover the cost for the Youth Mental Health First Aid Train-the-Trainer in Boise, ID on June 26-30, 2017. Funding is generously provided by St. Luke's. We ask that each applicant provide a portion of the training that fits within their ability. Contributions made by individuals will be accepted as a tax deductible donation to The Speedy Foundation and receipt will be provided at the end of the training. (This is not for the Region 4 scholarships from Blue Cross of Idaho.)

Application is due by 12:00 pm on June 16, 2017.
Applicants will be notified of awards by June 19, 2017, or sooner, via email.

Parking: Off-street parking is available in two parking structures adjacent to the Idaho Water Center. First hour free, $1 each additional hour 6 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Parking is free after 4:30 p.m. and weekends.
Parking at your own risk:
- Parking in Julia Davis Park off Myrtle might be a nice walk to start and end your day, but we are not sure what the city codes are for parking there.
- Parking off of Warm Springs Ave. might be another option to consider, with a short walk.
Boise has both Lyft and Uber services.

What You Learn

Instructor certification training introduces the 8-hour course, overviews adult learning styles and teaching strategies, and provides in-depth instruction on implementing and managing the program in diverse communities.

The training teaches you how to:

Teach the Mental Health First Aid course, including the 5-step action plan, evidence-supported treatment and self-help strategies, and prevalence data.
Present the program with fidelity to the tested, core model.
Apply the program to a range of adult learning styles.
Tailor presentations to diverse audiences and learning environments.

Training Format

National Trainers guide candidates through the 5 day new instructor training with an emphasis on coaching and preparing candidates to be ambassadors of Mental Health First Aid. Courses run from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. each day, with dedicated time for independent preparation for presentations. Each instructor candidate will present and teach an assigned portion of the eight-hour course to the group. The National Trainers will conduct an individual evaluation of each candidate, and each candidate will provide a peer review for their colleagues.

Certification is not guaranteed for all participants. To become certified, participants must be present for the entire training, satisfactorily deliver the presentation and pass a written exam.
