Recovery Is for Everyone: Rethinking Our Relationship with Alcohol This September
September is National Recovery Month, a time to celebrate people in recovery, recognize the many pathways that lead there, and remind our communities that recovery is possible. It is also an opportunity to think more broadly about the role alcohol plays in our lives and our communities.
At The Speedy Foundation, we believe prevention, mental health, substance use, and suicide prevention are deeply connected. Supporting recovery matters—and so does creating environments where people feel comfortable choosing not to drink in the first place.
That is part of the idea behind Zero Proof, For You.
You Don't Need a "Reason" Not to Drink
For a long time, choosing an alcohol-free drink came with questions:
Why aren't you drinking?
Are you driving?
Are you pregnant?
Are you in recovery?
But choosing not to drink doesn't require an explanation.
Someone might be in recovery. They might be taking medication, training for an event, prioritizing their sleep or mental health, driving home, participating in Dry January, cutting back, or simply not feel like drinking that night.
All of those choices deserve to feel normal.
Zero Proof, For You is our local alcohol-reduction and community wellness campaign designed to make alcohol-free choices more visible, appealing, and accessible throughout the Truckee–Tahoe region.
The goal isn't to tell people they can never drink. It's to create more choice.
Recovery-Friendly Communities Benefit Everyone
For someone in recovery, walking into a restaurant, celebration, fundraiser, or community event where alcohol is the centerpiece can be challenging. Having thoughtful alcohol-free options available sends a simple but powerful message:
You belong here, too.
And those options benefit far more than people who identify as being in recovery.
When businesses and community events offer appealing zero-proof drinks—and treat them as a normal part of the menu rather than an afterthought—we help shift the culture from "Why aren't you drinking?" to "What would you like to drink?"
That small shift supports prevention. It supports recovery. It supports mental and physical health. And it gives all of us more freedom to decide what is right for us.
This September, Make Room for Zero Proof
During National Recovery Month, we invite our community to celebrate recovery while also thinking about how we can make our spaces more welcoming to people at every point on the substance-use spectrum—from someone choosing their first alcohol-free night to someone celebrating decades of recovery.
Order the mocktail.
Stock alcohol-free options at your next gathering.
Support businesses offering zero-proof choices.
Invite someone for coffee, a hike, dinner, or an activity that doesn't revolve around drinking.
And most importantly, when someone says, "I'm not drinking tonight," let that be enough.
Recovery Month reminds us that people can change, heal, reconnect, and build lives that support their well-being. Prevention reminds us that we don't have to wait for a crisis to start making healthier choices.
Whether it's for tonight, for a month, for your health, for your recovery—or simply for you—there should always be a place for zero proof.
